 Reviews

"The Medical School Application Guide is the most popular book borrowed by our students looking to take up Graduate Entry Medicine. It gives an excellent insight into the strategic issues involved in applying to Medicine" -Pamela Andrew, Career Adviser at St Andrews University, UK

"I was very impressed with your guide. The amount of time and effort put in shows through and upon reading this I feel that approaching the world of graduate medicine, I am far better prepared. Some if the information that has been added covers areas that I wouldn't have considered prior. An example would be the ability to pick a university based on its decision of which aspect of the application it prioritises."-Michael Lockhart, UK

"Very useful book for GEP entry would recommend absolutely." -Anwin Mbah

"As Resource Adviser, [the MSAG Graduate Entry Medicine] is part of a pair that I would recommend in borrowing for students keen on Graduate Entry Medicine, the other being 'How to Master the UKCAT'" -Morag Fraser, Resource Adviser, St. Andrews University, UK

Updated every year and it has every single Medical schools entry requirements, selection criteria, ratio of applicants to places, where to apply if you score well on the UKCAT and where not to apply if you score badly in it. Content Details (Selected Sections)

All 53 programs fully covered -  Graduate Entry medicine normally refers to fast track, NHS funded, 4 year programs. Other graduate entry books in the market only cover the sixteen 4 year Graduate Entry Medicine courses in the UK. The MSAG Graduate Entry Medicine fully covers those 4 year programs but also covers the twenty seven 5 year programs and ten 6 year programs that graduate applicants are eligible for. This makes this guidebook the most complete guidebook for graduate applicants, covering a total of 53 medical courses.

What are your chances section - This is a unique section not available in any other guidebook or online. It allows you to find out which medical programs may give better consideration for someone with your academic and non academic profile. For example, it will say "find out your chances if you do not have a 2:1 in your undergraduate degree" and then give you the list and exact policies of all medical schools that may consider applicants who do not have a 2:1 in their undergraduate degree. In the same way, you will find a section on "find out your chances with a low GAMSAT", "find out your chances with no healthcare experience", "find out your chances with a low UKCAT", etc.

Entrance statistics -  This new section has been added  taking into account feedback from previous editions. Competitiveness is not the only criteria to consider when choosing where to apply but it is an important one. In the MSAG Graduate Entry Medicine 2012-2013, you will find the admissions ratio for each of the 53 medical programs in the UK open to graduate applicants. The summary tables make it very easy to scan through the admissions ratio for each program at a glance.

School by School section -  This is one of the most used sections in the guidebook by prospective applicants. We have summarised in a few pages for each universities, all the key information that you may want to consider in choosing where to apply. This includes for each medical program: Admissions policies, selection formulae, entrance statistics, course requirements, degree requirements, entrance examination requirements, interview structure and interview information, extra tips, tuition fees and contact details.

Medical course structures - This is also a new section added after receiving feedback from previous editions. Graduate Entry Programs vary greatly in teaching style. Some medical schools use traditional teaching method with a strong lecture based program while others have a Problem Based Learning approach (PBL). The details of the different teaching methods are explained and you will also find a very useful summary table which details the teaching style of every Graduate Entry Program.

Personal statement writing and Interview preparation -  Other guidebooks to Graduate Entry Medicine in the market focus on the medical programs while giving some advice on personal statement writing and interview preparation. Our guidebook has full information on the programs as described above, but also have a full section on personal statement writing and another complete section on interview preparation. You will find not only advice and tips, but more importantly plenty of real personal statement extracts fully commented on for you to read and learn. The interview section discusses what admission committees are looking for in the interview, provides information on the new MMI format used at several schools, and gives several example answers from successful applicants to questions like "What would you do if you go to work and one of your colleagues smells like alcohol" and "What do you think of abortion". Interview preparation is a key part of the application, and unsuccessful applicants frequently gain admission the following year by preparing better for their interviews. The section teaches applicants how to approach interview questions, and prepares students by discussing many of the most frequently asked interview questions.

These sections are not short add-ons to the main book but instead form a big part of it and are complete enough that they could constitute a separate book.

GAMSAT, UKCAT and BMAT sections - In the MSAG Graduate Entry Medicine 2012-2013, you will find detailed information about how each university uses the GAMSAT, the UKCAT and/or the BMAT, including previous cutoff scores for the medical schools that set strict cutoffs. This is very different for each university and is thus an important consideration when deciding where to apply. You will also find amongst other tips a great deal of information about resources to help you prepare for these exams including courses, home study packages, private tutoring, books, practice questions and mock exams.
